De nombreuses recherches ont montré que la façon dont les médecins communiquent avec les patients peut avoir une profonde influence sur les résultats comportementaux, psychosociaux et cliniques de la rencontre. Cependant, la communication avec les patients plus âgés est souvent compromise par certains aspects du processus de vieillissement. La communication peut également être affectée par le cadre dans lequel elle se déroule, et l'hôpital présente des barrières que l'on ne trouve pas dans les sites ambulatoires. Ces préoccupations sont souvent aggravées dans les décisions de fin de vie pour les patients âgés lorsqu'elles sont discutées en milieu hospitalier.


Much research has shown that how physicians communicate with patients can have profound influence on behavioral, psychosocial, and clinical outcomes of the encounter. Communication with older patients, however, is often compromised by some attributes of the aging process. Communication can also be affected by the setting in which it takes place, and the hospital presents some barriers not found in ambulatory sites. These concerns are often compounded in end-of-life decisions for older patients when discussed in hospital settings.
